This is me, Montgomery

Kress on Dexter - Montgomery, AL
ON VIEW NOW

An immersive listening and visual scrims show BRINGING storybooth voices to life

Featuring: Featuring storyteller recordings from the Storybooth archive and handcrafted quilts and tapestries by Lynthia Edwards, Leslie K Morgan, Chintia Kirana and Willie Mae Brown

As a city often cloaked in myth, This is me, Montgomery challenges us to learn more by listening. In 2018, our custom recording Storybooth opened in Montgomery inviting citizens to co-author a fresh narrative of themselves and this storied place. Since then, hundreds have shared moments of poignant reflection and spontaneous discovery.

This is me, Montgomery encourages you to explore the Storybooth archive by listening to 12 curated stories while viewing corresponding tapestries and quilts. With deep roots in Alabama, quilting is the ideal medium to dig more deeply into southern stories. The artform embodies the connection between the past and present, human creativity, resilience and cultural heritage. While some pieces on display bring the words of the storyteller to life through illustration, others re-imagine and challenge what we think we see, hear, and know. The collection of stories & quilts in This is Me, Montgomery underscores how one person’s experience can resonate across space and time — fostering deeper awareness, dialogue, empathy and resolve.

This exhibition is dedicated to the storytellers, makers, community organizers, activists and caregivers in Montgomery.
