Reflections in Color
Peachtree Creek Greenway – Brookhaven, GA
October 19, 2024 – March 31, 2025
A sculptural showcase featuring works by Sayma Hossain and Morgan Lugo in dialogue about the vibrancy of the Buford Highway community, unveiling alongside the Brookhaven International Festival.
Their respective sculptures, Woven Minds and Technicolor TimeScape, use color, translucency, and form to create a dynamic visual experience that shifts with the changing daylight and environment. The interplay of light and form pays tribute to the rich and evolving tapestry of community connections, and offers viewers a contemplative space amongst their natural surroundings.
About the Artists
Sayma Hossain
Sayma Hossain (she/they) (B.1992 Dhaka, Bangladesh) is a textile artist who navigates with found-objects, unorthodox quilt making, installations and tapestry weavings. Her practice revolves around repurposing textiles or once discarded items and applying traditional textiles techniques to the materials. Growing up at the cultural intersection of Bangladesh and the American South, her work reflects on highlighting labor laws in fast fashion, mental health in the South Asian diaspora and idiosyncrasies of food waste.
She received her BFA in Studio Arts with a concentration in Textile Design from Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University in 2016.
She's currently based in Atlanta, GA.
Morgan Lugo
Morgan Lugo is a Sicilian/Puerto Rican sculptor from Atlanta, Georgia. Lugo's work explores the nuances of memory within the human experience. Morgan prefers to use permanent materials, such as bronze, to speak to the lasting effects of past experiences on the progression of personal growth. After healing from a brain injury, Lugo became fascinated with the physicality of memory and what a fleeting moment of personal experience might look like as it transitions into a memory. Lugo's work explores the physical instances where individual and communal memories intersect and simultaneously influence one another. Lugo explores this intersection by recreating the structural similarities between the human body and the universe. She utilizes the structural compositions of neurons in the brain and various astronomical phenomena, such as constellations. These works show how our unique perspectives, along with the cultural influences of our communities, largely shape the individuality of our own experiences within a shared space.
About the Artwork
woven minds
Woven Minds is an installation that explores the relationship between translucence and perception within the tranquil setting of the Peachtree Creek Greenway. Composed of acrylic panels and steel hardware, the piece takes inspiration from Morgan Lugo’s sculptural installation Technicolor TimeScape, extending its themes of unity and diversity by celebrating the vibrant Buford Highway community.
The translucent colors—blues, greens, and yellows—echo the ambiguity found in nature, allowing light to pass through and merge with the environment. As the piece interacts with its natural surroundings, the shifting hues and shadows create a fluid dialogue with the changing daylight, emphasizing the tension between human emotion and nature’s calm. This dynamic interplay offers a space for contemplation and reflection amidst the everyday hustle.
Technicolor TimeScape
Technicolor TimeScape is a sculpture that pays tribute to the interplay between individual and collective memory within a community, embodying a three-dimensional neurological network that weaves together personal experiences and shared histories. Through the use of negative space and transparent acrylic layers, it generates a dynamic spectrum of colors, symbolizing the rich tapestry of community connections. Mirror-polished stainless steel reflects viewers, integrating them as active participants in the evolving composition. The design mirrors the cultural vibrancy of the Buford Highway corridor, inviting viewers to engage with their community’s cultural fabric. The sculpture’s appearance shifts with the time of day and environment, creating a unique experience with each viewing. Its shadows, like a living sundial, trace time and enhance the interplay between light, structure, and community.
Programming
On opening day of the exhibition, guests were invited to join us and artist Sayma Hossain for a hands-on program celebrating the power of creativity using everyday materials – such as the acrylic featured in Reflections in Color. Visitors created personalized keychains alongside the artist with opportunities to customize their own original messages and designs, and explore how accessible materials and tools can unlock endless creative possibilities.
